Turmeric Shots
Bright yellow shots of goodness, these turmeric shots are said to:
- Reduce inflammation and assist with joint pain
- Increase antioxidant capacity of the body
- Lower the risk of heart disease
- Increase your cancer fighting capability
- Increase your levels of Brain Derived Neurotropic Factor (BDNF) which protects against Alzheimer’s and dementia
- Assist with digestion and liver function
You can get ready made shots in many foodie delis, but if you do not fancy spending upwards of £3.00 per tiny bottle (and adding to the plastic mountain every time), then try this homemade recipe with a whole lot more goodness than in commercial versions.
For each shot you will need:
- A wine glass and a half of water (so you can drink the shot!)
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric root powder (to give you all the benefits above)
- 1 slice of ginger root about 2cm thick (for flavour and good for your stomach)
- Squeeze of lemon juice (for flavour and balancing acid)
- 1 teaspoon of Manuka honey (to boost immune system and assist flavour)
- A twist of black pepper (to assist absorption of curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric)
- Half a teaspoon of coconut oil (curcumin needs fat to be absorbed)
To make your shot
- Mix the turmeric and water in a small saucepan
- Add the ginger root
- Bring to a simmer and keep it bubbling for 5 minutes (not boiling – you will just evaporate your water)
- Take off the heat and let it cool a little
- Strain into your shot glass using a tea strainer (to take out some of the powder)
- Squeeze in the lemon juice
- Add the honey
- Twist your pepper
- Stir in the coconut oil
Drink it down. If you hate it at first, persevere. If the taste doesn’t improve your joints and health will and after a few days the yellow demon will be your friend.
