The best hand creams for sassy hands over 45

The first Sassy product test

If you have a daily shower and do the washing up (we are jealous if you never have to wash up!)

then your mitts will have spent upwards of 33,000 hours in water. If you go swimming every week add a few thousand more. Then there is pollution, doing the gardening, scrubbing the barbeque, decorating…and on and on. No wonder our hands are the first body part to reveal our age.

Ageing hands age you. Thin skin, raised veins, rough knuckles and even cracked finger tips and nails are all signs of neglect. The good news is that you can turn your pointers back to pretty in days with a regime of hand scrub and moisturising. But with thousands of hand creams to choose from, which are going to make the most of your money and effort? Which will transform your paws back to sassy?

This is the first Sassista test. We randomly chose a range of hand creams from the expensive to the cheap as chips. We rated them out of 5 on feel, scent, results, packaging, and value. Here are the results:

 Body shop hemp hand cream

5

Love this! Smooths in instantly. My hands are back to soft and supple in days

L’Occitane shea butter hand cream

5

Gorgeousness in a tube. Smooths, smells lovely and transforms your hands.

Garnier hand cream

4.5

Great product. I would definitely buy. Even with sensitive skin I had no problems.

Nivea rescue and care

4.5

Good value. Good to apply if a little sticky. As good as more expensive hand creams.

Clarins Hand and Nail Treatment

4.5

This old favourite of the celebs lived up to its reputation. Good feel, lovely smell and hands are looking good after 10 days use. Only lost half a point on cost/value for money.

No. 7

4

Feels good on application and was effective. Not the most inspiring package.

E45

3

Very thick so hard to rub in. Not a pleasant smell. OK, but not a first choice.

Atrixo

3

Made my hands soft and seems to help nails, but no more than other creams. No remarkable difference.

Neutrogena Visibly renew

3

A little greasy but smells nice. Good day to day product but no significant change in hands.

No.7 Protect and Perfect

2.5

Was expecting great things but did not see a real difference. Needs lots of rubbing in unless you want greasy hands.

Lancome Nutrix Royal Hands

2.5

Looks classy in the bathroom and smells good. But as the most expensive hand cream in the test, this was disappointing. A little greasy, so takes a while to rub in. No real difference to my hands over 20 days.

So the overall verdict? Price does not always get you the best results. Natural ingredients seem to make the difference. If you know a hand cream which is sassy and fab, please let us know in the comments box.

Next test is eye creams. Watch this space.
